The Musical Box: Bringing Genesis Magic To Ridgefield

by John A. Wilcox

The lights go down. Fog rolls in. A simple but innovative stage is lit as otherworldly chords create an exotic mood. Unusual rhythms build and build as the chords climb higher. A man appears. Is he an alien? Dressed in black with glowing eyes and a multicolor cape. The man quietly approaches the microphone. Man and band proceed to blow you away with a note-for-not version of Watcher Of The Skies.Music, staging, costumes, and theatrics have transported you to the Selling England By The Pound known as the Black Show. Genesis performed this on a series of dates back in 1974. Through the miracle that is The Musical Box, 1974 still exists in 2016.

Hailing from Canada, The Musical Box are specialists in precisely re-creating several classic Genesis concerts right down to the exact equipment, videos, costumes, set lists, and between-song patter. Their attention to detail is obsessive and quite staggering. No detail is to small. As a result, The Musical Box transcend the idea of a tribute band. They are custodians of the spirit of Genesis. Over the years they have recreated the Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, and A Trick Of The Tail tours. The tour for Selling England By The Pound was divided into White Shows and Black Shows - so named for their backdrops. The set lists vary slightly.

If you're new to the Peter Gabriel era of Genesis - expect challenging, melodic compositions full of power, beauty, and drama. Lots of costumes to bring many of the stories to life. You'll laugh and you'll cry but you'll never be bored! Diehard fans need no prodding - they'll be packing the Ridgefield Playhouse to fill up on numbers like Firth Of Fifth, The Battle Of Epping Forest, and the stunning Supper's Ready. Take your seat and join The Musical Box as they start up the time machine for an evening of thrills and smiles.
