Glenn Hughes Brings Deep Purple Madness To Norwalk!

by John A. Wilcox

The year was 1973. Vocalist Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover had parted ways with hard rockers Deep Purple after the success of Woman From Tokyo from their most recent studio album Who Do We Think We Are!. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord, and drummer Ian Paice needed to fill the newly vacated slots and move forward. Enter vocalist David Coverdale and bassist / vocalist Glenn Hughes. Hughes was fresh off of recording & gigging with the band Trapeze.

The result was the take-no-prisoners album Burn. Songs like Mistreated, Might Just Take Your Life, Sail Away, You Fool No One, and the unforgettable title track scorched their way up the charts and led to a legendary gig at 1974's first California Jam. Coverdale & Hughes were both vocal powerhouses and together they raised every roof and drove legions of fans around the world mad!

The follow-up - Stormbringer - led to Blackmore parting ways to then form the band Rainbow. Blackmore felt Coverdale & Hughes were steering Purple in a more soulful & funky direction with numbers like Hold On and You Can't Do It Right (With The One You Love) sitting beside rockers like Lady Double Dealer, The Gypsy and the fierce title track. Blackmore stayed for a final tour (captured on the Made In Europe album) then began the revolving door that was & is Rainbow.

Ritchie Blackmore's replacement was James Gang guitarist Tommy Bolin - the 1st American member of Deep Purple. Come Taste The Band was the result. Gettin' Tighter brought the funk. Owed To 'G' brought a bit of fusion. This Time Around was pure soul. You Keep On Moving, Lady Luck, and Comin' Home were in-your-face rock. A spotty tour with several members of the band in the throes of drug addiction put this version of Deep Purple to pasture and Bolin's drug woes ended his life shortly after.

The legacy of Burn, Stormbringer, and Come Taste The Band over 4 decades later is...great songs! Glenn Hughes and his band are on the road celebrating these albums as well as 1 or 2 pre-Hughes numbers (bet on hearing Smoke On The Water!). Bring your earplugs & be prepared to rock out all evening!!
