The Musical Box Bring The Selling England By The Pound Show Back To The Ridgefield Playhouse

by John A. Wilcox

1973 was quite a year for progressive music. So many important albums - Pink Floyd - The Dark Side Of The Moon, Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans, Jethro Tull - A Passion Play, Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery, PFM - Photos Of Ghosts, Tangerine Dream - Atem, Peter Hammill - Chameleon In The Shadow Of The Night. Quite a list! Add to that the penultimate Genesis studio release featuring Peter Gabriel on lead vocals - Selling England By The Pound.

Housed in a striking Betty Swanwick cover, Selling England By The Pound featured the classic Genesis line up of Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett, and Mike Rutherford. The band co-produced the album with John Burns. The album has a rock-solid tracklist with a wide variety of material: Dancing With The Moonlit Knight, I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe), Firth Of Fifth, More Fool Me (With a lead vocal by Collins), The Battle Of Epping Forest, After The Ordeal, The Cinema Show/Aisle Of Plenty. I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) even charted as a single. Genesis were truly on the move!

They took the album on the road across the globe. The early leg of the tour has been dubbed The White Show as it featured a white hourglass-shaped set of pieces behind the band. The later shows of the tour replaced the white hourglass pieces with a black curtain, earning the nickname The Black Show. The majority of the setlists on the tour were as follows: Watcher of the Skies, Dancing with the Moonlit Knight, The Cinema Show, I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe), Firth of Fifth, The Musical Box, Horizons (some shows had More Fool Me in this slot), The Battle of Epping Forest, Supper's Ready. Often there was no encore, but when there was an encore, it was either The Knife or Return Of The Giant Hogweed for the most part. Gabriel's costume repertoire grew quite a bit, and their slide show grew as well. This all serves as a preface to say that Canada's The Musical Box will once again present The White Show in painstaking detail for you at the Ridgefield Playhouse! Be there!!
