Richard Thompson And Son To Rock The Ridgefield Playhouse

by John A. Wilcox

As the Fairport Convention song asked who knows where the time goes? Indeed. It seems like only yesterday guitarist / composer extraordinaire Richard Thompson had left the aforementioned Fairport Convention to strike out on his own as a solo artist. Now he's touring with his son as his opening act! Let me backtrack here for those who may not know the full story. The latter third of the 1960's saw the formation of British electric folk rockers Fairport Convention. Within their fold were massive talents Sandy Denny, Dave Swarbrick, and a young lad named Richard Thompson who knew his way around the guitar. Combining centuries-old British folk tunes with original compositions and a Bob Dylan song or three, Fairport blazed a trail with albums like Unhalfbricking and Liege & Lief and unforgettable pieces like Meet On The Ledge, Matty Groves, and Crazy Man Michael.

By 1971, Thompson got the solo itch and Fairport Convention soldiered on without him (they prosper to this very day!). In 1972, he released Henry The Human Fly, his first solo album. Notable albums such as Hand Of Kindness, Daring Adventures, Rumor And Sigh, and Dream Attic are just a few of those that followed. In 2013 Thompson released the critically lauded Electric and shows no signs of slowing down. As a writer, his work has been covered by the likes of David Gilmour, Bonnie Raitt, Elvis Costello, Marshall Crenshaw, Nanci Griffith, Bob Mould, The Blind Boys of Alabama, and countless others. As a guitarist, Thompson is without peer. As a dad, he grows opening acts! Joining him on this tour is son Teddy, a fine musician in his own right. Teddy has 5 solo albums under his belt and has guested with artists from Rufus Wainwright to Roseanne Cash to Shawn Colvin. Ridgefield audiences will be treated to 2 generations of Thompsons separately as well as together. Don't miss a night of songs that touch and guitars that thrill!
