Abby Travis Joins The Go-Gos In Ridgefield

by John A. Wilcox

Change in all things is sweet. So said Aristotle. It applies perfectly to the Go-Gos. Vocalist Belinda Carlisle, drummer Gina Schock, and guitarists Jane Wiedlin and Charlotte Caffey remain from the hitmaking line-up. Bassist Kathy Valentine is no longer part of the ensemble. Stepping into Valentine's shoes is Abby Travis. Initially a temporary member in 2012 to replace an injured Valentine on tour, in 2013 Travis seems to have jelled with the band. Oddly enough, among Travis' many studio sessions was bass work on Valentine's solo album Light Years several years back. Studio and live sessions are nothing new to Abby Travis, having played with Elastica, Beck, Masters Of Reality, KMFDM, and Go-Gos spiritual cousins the Bangles. Oh, did I neglect to mention psychedelic prog legends Brainticket? In 2011, Travis took on such Brainticket classics as Black Sand, Places Of Light, and Egyptian Kings on a double bill with Nektar.

A musical chameleon on the order of Danielle Dax, Travis is the daughter of our Secretary of the Democratic National Committee, Alice Travis Germond. In addition to her session work, Abby Travis has 4 highly distinctive solo albums - the latest of which is titled IV, featuring the singles Lulu and Rosetta. Go-Gos fans will hear all the hits they crave - from Our Lips Are Sealed to Vacation to We Got The Beat - when they hit the stage at the Ridgefield Playhouse. Prog/psych/industrial/experimental fans will get the additional bonus of the ever-changing Abby Travis!
